BEDDING IN THE CAM

The first moments of operation of a new cam are vitally important with respect to whether or not it will live long. To help it survive, coat the cam lobes and bottom of the followers with a graphite based high pressure lubricant such as Graphogen, although a molybdenum assembly grease is equally good.

Do as much as possible to ensure the engine starts fairly quickly (set ignition timing etc) and, once running, immediately take it to around 2500rpm and keep it there for about 15 to 20 minutes. This high rpm increases the oil supply, reduces load on the cam and gives the lobes and followers time to bed-in. We usually rev the engine gently at between 2000 and 2700rpm during this time, just to vary the speed and load. Do not let the engine idle at any time during this period. If you need to do something to the car, switch off, adjust, then take the engine speed back up for the remainder of the run-in period.
